I started reading this when it came up on the list of new comics on The Belfry WebComics Index just recently. I understand that I'm *way* into the past of the comic, and that it will have improved a lot in the meantime, but I just can't get past this chapter.

The story seems to hinge on this sudden underground war wherein almost none of the factions have been defined beforehand. As a consequence, I have almost not idea who anyone is, nor whose side they're on, (not even how many sides there are). And if I'm following this at all--and I'm not even slightly confident that I am--it really just makes me wonder why control of the underground was ever in contention. It seems like there's unstoppable psychopaths on one side, and almost everyone else is an incompetent boob.

I just can't help but ask, "What's the point?"

That's a good question and a fair point. The intention was to show that the undercity gangs are actually active threats not only to the upper city but each other, and that there are forces actively manipulating them. They've done more than just carved out safe little kingdoms for themselves but are actively at war with one another and ruining the lives of everyone they come in contact with.
